Office of Terminal Waste Disposal and Remedial Action. At first, like many earlier waste practices, tailings were handled in a way that put the environment and humans at risk. This resulted in requiring remediation of the disposal sites, particularly through the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Program (UMTRAP) under the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA).

This program facilitated the cleanup of 15 million cubic yards of uranium tailings at former uranium mill sites in nine western Colorado communities. Because much of the cleanup is complete, the focus has shifted to primarily "Post-UMTRA issues," or the discovery of new uranium mill tailings material by private citizens, utility companies or local governments.

The Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project was created by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to monitor the cleanup of uranium mill tailings. In the US Congress passed the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) which tasked the DOE with the responsibility of stabilizing, disposing, and controlling uranium mill tailings and other contaminated.

The DOE is also responsible for cleaning up properties in the vicinity of the sites where wind and water erosion deposited tailings or people removed them from the site for use in construction or landscaping projects. Cleanup is being undertaken in cooperation with state.
